I’ve come across the perfect book for gardening in Houston. Year Round Vegetables, Fruits and Flowers for Metro Houston by Bob Randall, Ph.D, was written, as the title says, for Houston. Some of the gardening instructions are even specific to the area of Houston based on the average temperatures of the different areas. The city and surrounding areas are so large, there is some variation in hardiness requirements over the span of the city.
So, I am currently reading through this book and getting an idea of the varieties of fruits and veggies I want to grow. I’m also thinking about how I can reduce the amount of lawn I have to mow. I currently have a corner lot. The backyard is an average size for this area, but the front yard is large. Any plans I have for reducing the amount of mowing should include changes to the frontyard, since it is so big and would be the easiest to do something different with. It’s too bad neighbors and the HOA tend to like grass…
